SUMMARY:Quantification of Material Properties and Stress-Free State of Hum
an Erythrocytes, through Hierarchical Bayesian Inference
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nQuantification of Material Properties and Str
ess-Free State of Human Erythrocytes, through Hierarchical Bayesian Infere
 nce\n\nEconomides, Amoudruz, Arampatzis, Koumoutsakos\n\nComputational mod
els of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) require a stress-free state (SFS) to compute
the shear stresses on the membrane. However, the exact SFS of healthy RBC
s is unknown and cannot be measured from current experimental techniques.
In this work, we employ Hierarchical Bayesian Inference to create a probab
ilistic RBC model and quantify the SFS, along with all material properties
of the RBC model. This new, probabilistic model is calibrated using exper
imental data available in the literature, for RBCs in equilibrium, under s
tretching, and during relaxation after elongation. The probabilistic model
gives an accurate prediction of the data used during the inference, as we
ll as unseen experimental data of flowing RBCs, undergoing complex dynamic
al motions. This demonstrates the transferability of the probabilistic RBC
model and its potential for accurate prediction of RBC dynamics in multip
 le settings.\n\nDomain: Engineering, Life Sciences
