DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nFrom the Trenches of a Central RSE Team: Succ
esses and Challenges of Promoting Software Sustainability in a Multi-Scale
Computational Setting\n\nBluteau\n\nThe UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA
) is a laboratory at the forefront of fusion energy research, a multidisci
plinary and computationally intensive domain that places difficult demands
on the requisite data and software. Like many national laboratories, UKAE
A has long employed staff whose primary role is the development of researc
h software. However, it is only comparatively recently, in tandem with the
advent of the Research Software Engineering (RSE) movement, that these ro
les have been formalised and given the recognition they deserve. The culmi
nation was the creation of a central RSE Team at UKAEA, opening new vistas
to promote sustainable software practices. This talk will provide an over
view of the current strategies the UKAEA RSE Team uses to promote sustaina
ble software and the successes and challenges in implementing these. Parti
cular focus will be given to the author's personal experience as a central
RSE, and some of the initiatives he has been involved in, such as a new t
raining delivery at the intermediate level of software development and com
munity building efforts around a Coding Discussion Group and annual Unconf
erence.\n\nDomain: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Engineering
