SUMMARY:Good-Enough Practice – Reflections on a Pandemic Response
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nGood-Enough Practice – Reflections on a Pande
mic Response\n\nWilliams\n\nThe SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has posed many scienti
fic challenges, and some of these have resulted in mathematical and statis
tical modelling, and data analysis, receiving a substantial amount of air-
time in the public domain. Underpinning these analyses are data pipelines,
computational infrastructures, and research software. This talk will refl
ect on how the ideals surrounding software sustainability and best practic
e align with the realities of providing a response to a global pandemic. A
pplying the principles behind sustainability and reproducibility is key to
maintaining trustworthy and reliable outputs, which is of great importanc
e when working for a public health body. However, in addition to pressures
that accompany short deadlines, real-time data flows and remote working,
individuals have had to face the realities of the pandemic at work whilst
also dealing with personal impacts. Any one of these aspects can pose a ch
allenge to implementing and upholding best practice, but when combined, at
what point does, and should, best practice be re-framed as “good-enough”
practice? There will also be observations on how activities undertaken bef
ore 2020 improved our work, as well as outlining how we are creating a com
munity of practice to bring together colleagues across our organisation to
further discuss best (or good-enough) practice.\n\nDomain: Computer Scien
 ce and Applied Mathematics, Engineering
