SUMMARY:The Challenges of Building Large Collaborations: my Activities wit
hin the SKA Project
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nThe Challenges of Building Large Collaboratio
ns: my Activities within the SKA Project\n\nFerrari\n\nThe SKAO will be th
e largest radio astronomical observatory of the next decade. A huge amount
of data that will come out from the antennas of its two telescopes (in Au
stralia and South Africa), requiring a real-time processing on-site for an
initial data reduction, followed by the execution of a variety of workflo
ws on two sub-exascale machines. The final scientific products (about 700
PBytes/yr) will be distributed to scientists all around the world through
a network of SKA Regional Centres.
Since 2016, I am director of SKA-F
rance, a structure intended to coordinate the SKA-related activities in Fr
ance from the scientific, technical and industry point of view. From 2017
to 2019 I have been chairing the H2020 projects AENEAS ("Advanced European
Network of E-infrastructures for Astronomy with the SKA"), and in 2020 I
have been elected Chair of the European SKA Forum, a platform to promote j
oint European SKA-related initiatives in view of the beginning of the SKA
Observatory construction.
In this talk I will describe some of the e
xciting and challenging activities related to these roles, with a particul
ar focus on those connected to HPC and intended to build inter-disciplinar
y bridges with different actors of this domain.\n\nDomain: Computer Scienc
e and Applied Mathematics, Engineering
