SUMMARY:From Petascale to Exascale: the Vlasiator Semi-Lagrangian Grid-Bas
ed Plasma Simulation in the Age of GPU Supercomputing
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nFrom Petascale to Exascale: the Vlasiator Sem
i-Lagrangian Grid-Based Plasma Simulation in the Age of GPU Supercomputing
 \n\nBattarbee, Ganse, Pfau-Kempf, Alho, Papadakis...\n\nKinetic plasma dyn
amics of near-Earth space impact us through space weather, visible as beau
tiful aurorae, and posing various hazards for space missions and satellite
 s. Vlasiator is a global kinetic plasma simulation which models the Earth'
s magnetic domain in six dimensions, solving the Vlasov equation in the io
n-kinetic hybrid approximation. As a grid-based approach, Vlasiator models
kinetic dynamics throughout the whole simulation domain with a noise-free
formalism. With a sparse hashmap velocity space and adaptive spatial mesh
refinement, global 6D simulations have been achieved with the fastest CPU
-based supercomputers in the world. With the advent of exascale approachin
g, Vlasiator is being extended to support heterogeneous architectures with
its solvers ported to accelerator cards. We will discuss the challenges a
nd advances taken so far, highlighting the unique approach required for ou
r model.\n\nDomain: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Engineering,
