SUMMARY:Going Viral with #COVIDIsAirborne: Harnessing Cinematic Design for
 Communicating Science
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nGoing Viral with #COVIDIsAirborne: Harnessing
Cinematic Design for Communicating Science\n\nDommer\n\n“The virus is an
airborne threat,” the CDC admitted in May 2021, finally acknowledging the
avalanche of evidence and shouts from thousands of physicians, infectious
disease experts, and aerosol scientists. It took 16 months into the deadly
COVID-19 pandemic for the CDC to change its language and advocate for str
icter masking protocols, highlighting the critical role of science communi
cation between disparate communities to affect meaningful change. Our work
has leveraged HPC to investigate coronavirus dynamics across multiple mol
ecular modeling scales. In an effort to disseminate this research to exper
ts across disciplines and to the public, we commandeered the #COVIDIsAirbo
rne hashtag on social media, specifically bolstering our approach with ele
ments of cinema, design, and storytelling. We have overcome myriad challen
ges related to processing and visualizing large datasets, translating comp
lex theory into audience appropriate language, and tailoring our presentat
ions for print and online formats. Our work has had significant reach. It
won the prestigious Gordon Bell Special Prize, has been widely shared on s
ocial media, featured by news outlets across the globe including The N
ew York Times, and showcased in the Royal Institution Christmas Lectu
res by the BBC. Here we will describe the particular challenges of going v
iral with #COVIDIsAirborne.\n\nDomain: Climate, Weather and Earth Sciences
