SUMMARY:Fostering Dialogue and Building Trust in HPC: Case Studies in Brid
ging Biology, Computing, and Communities
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nFostering Dialogue and Building Trust in HPC:
Case Studies in Bridging Biology, Computing, and Communities\n\nAatresh\n
\nIn thinking about building resilient technical and social infrastructure
s surrounding HPC, reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic offers myriad oppor
tunities to examine evolving ways in which innovation in science and techn
ology are shaped by and shaping of societal dynamics. Vaccines are only as
effective as the sociopolitical nature of hesitancy rates allows, while d
emocratic ideas underpinning responsibilities of a government or a corpora
tion to its citizens, or citizens to each other, have also been reappraise
d whether through debates about testing or strategies of public health com
munication. To reflect on this evolution in terms of HPC, this talk a seri
es of case studies involving computing, biology, and communication, featur
ing the United States CDC’s new Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analyt
ics, biotech company Ginkgo Bioworks’ Grow magazine based on IBM’
s Think, and biotech company Centivax’s series of YouTube videos
on computational immunology. In taking these case studies related to HPC a
cross academia, government, and industry, this talk aims to highlight stra
tegies for effective engagement with media, policy, and society that creat
es dialogue and change across boundaries and in the process builds trust w
ith communities — pointing at ways in which HPC can be deployed with democ
ratic robustness in simulating various technological futures.\n\nDomain: C
