SUMMARY:WarmWorld: Exascale EarthSystem Models to Anticipate Changes in a
Warmer World
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nWarmWorld: Exascale EarthSystem Models to Ant
icipate Changes in a Warmer World\n\nFrauen, Behrens, Kosukhin, Bockelmann
, Klocke\n\nWarmWorld is a German national project supposed to start in au
tumn 2022. It aims to harness advances in high-performance computing and d
ata analysis to compute and evaluate climate warming trajectories and make
their inherent information content transparent to scientific communities.
A central component of this climate information system will be an ICON-ba
sed earth system model capable of resolving global oceanic and atmospheric
coupled circulation systems on kilometer-scales with a throughput of one
simulated year per day on future exascale HPC-systems. To achieve this, a
transformation of the ICON software towards an open, scalable, modularized
and flexible code is needed such that independent development (both scie
ntific and informatics) will be enabled.
To lay the technical founda
tion for these ambitious plans, a preparatory preWarmWorld project already
started in 2021, which aims to develop a software blueprint for ICON. Bas
ed on prototype model components like the atmospheric tracer advection it
will test strategies for modularisation, memory management and language in
teroperability to evaluate the suitability of various programming paradigm
s for ICON.
Here, we will present first results from preWarmWorld, gi
ve an outlook on WarmWorld and show how these developments align with the
overall ICON developments and other projects presented in this mini-sympos
ium.\n\nDomain: Climate, Weather and Earth Sciences, Engineering, Physics
