SUMMARY:ICON-C: An Earth-System Model for the Exa-Scale Era
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nICON-C: An Earth-System Model for the Exa-Sca
le Era\n\nKlocke, Bockelmann, Lapillonne, Potthast, Vogel\n\nThe ICON deve
lopment partners decided to make the ICON code open, scalable, modular and
more flexible in order to scale the model development across the partner
institutions and contributing projects and prepare the code to perform eff
icient simulations on the upcoming exascale high-performance computers. To
achieve those goals, large code transformations are necessary, which are
in most parts realized through third party projects and supported by the I
CON development institutions. The resulting model is referred to as ICON-c
onsolidated (ICON-C). The ICON code base will be restructured and modulari
zed to reduce dependencies, clarify interfaces and make ICON accessible to
source code transformation and language interoperability. The changes wil
l be accompanied by the implementation of tests for sub-parts of the model
. Developments will happen stepwise in two streams, where large infrastruc
ture changes, will be developed in a separate repository. After completion
, this becomes the default code base, while a new stream is opened for the
next large infrastructure change. Eventually the whole code base will be
 transformed into a modernized software.<br /> Here, we outline ICON-C in t
he context of contributing projects and present the first steps towards th
e realization of ICON-C.\n\nDomain: Climate, Weather and Earth Sciences, E
