SUMMARY:Research Software Alliance - The Role of Policy in Research Softwa
re
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nResearch Software Alliance - The Role of Poli
cy in Research Software\n\nBarker\n\nThe Research Software Alliance (ReSA)
utilises social science frameworks to achieve its mission of bringing res
earch software communities together to collaborate on the advancement of t
he research software ecosystem. Frameworks focused on achieving system cha
nge and community engagement are most relevant, and are applied across ReS
A’s three themes of people, policy and infrastructure.

This ta
lk considers how these frameworks can be applied to improving understandin
g of policy related to the recognition and valuing of research software an
d the people who develop and maintain it. Policy plays a key role in encou
raging and supporting software recognition, as a top-down approach that ca
n incentivise change by making it required. Social science frameworks can
be applied to understand the role of policies in this area, including thei
r intended and unintended consequences, and across policy stakeholders suc
h as governments, funders, employers and infrastructure providers (such as
publisher and repository providers). This talk will also discuss ReSA’s e
ngagement in this area, and opportunities for involvement in this.\n\nDoma
