SUMMARY:An Overview of Research Software Science Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nAn Overview of Research Software Science Appr
oaches\n\nHeroux\n\nResearch Software Science is defined as apply
ing the scientific method to understand and improve how software is develo
ped and used in research. Research Software Scientist (RSS) activities hav
e been present in the scientific software community for many years but sel
dom with distinct goals beyond implicitly helping teams do better work as
they produce results using software. In recent years, the role Research So
ftware Engineer (RSE) has emerged as a widely understand and increasingly
standard term to identify people who provide software engineering skills t
o a scientific software project. By defining and using the term RSE, the s
cientific software community has made substantial progress in realizing th
e potential of RSE activities and establishing RSE career paths. RSS is a
newer term, but we argue that RSS activities can benefit from a similar ex
plicit recognition and cultivation. Research software development and use
have become sufficiently complex and important to scientific discovery tha
t studying these activities using scientific approaches can have tremendou
s positive impacts. In this presentation, we characterize and explore the
potential of research software science by describing common software devel
opment and use situations where a scientific approach to addressing proble
ms provides the best opportunity for optimal outcomes.\n\nDomain: Computer
