SUMMARY:The Challenges of Theory-Software Translation
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nThe Challenges of Theory-Software Translation
\n\nJay\n\nSoftware is now ubiquitous within research. In addition to the
general challenges common to all software development projects, research s
oftware must also represent, manipulate, and provide data for complex theo
retical constructs. Ensuring this process of theory-software translation i
s robust is essential to maintaining the integrity of the science resultin
g from it, and yet there has been little formal recognition or exploration
of the issues associated with it.

This talk explores the proce
ss of translating between scientific theory and software, and presents a f
ramework illustrating the challenges it entails, constructed through facil
itated discussions with computational scientists and research software eng
ineers. It makes the case for conducting empirical work to directly addres
s these challenges, and considers how social and software researchers can
work together to improve the quality and robustness of our science.\n\nDom
