SUMMARY:Software Catalogs and Software Sharing
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nSoftware Catalogs and Software Sharing\n\nvan
Nieuwpoort\n\nResearch software plays a crucial role in academic research
and has become a key output of many research projects. We strongly believ
e that the efficiency, quality and reproducibility of research benefits fr
om high quality reusable software. However, the way in which research soft
ware is shared with fellow researchers often leaves much to be desired. Do
cumentation often does not show the role the software has played within re
search projects, nor the relationship between software and other academic
output. This lack of context makes it difficult for other researchers to d
iscover relevant software, resulting in duplication of effort when softwar
e is re-developed instead of being reused. In addition, software that is r
eused is often not (properly) cited. As a result, it is hard to measure th
e impact of research software using traditional means, resulting in reduce
d recognition for research software engineers (RSEs) and software-oriented
research institutes. We discuss software catalogs, and how they can be use
d to address the challenges above. Moreover, software catalogs are an impo
rtant tool to implement the FAIR principles for research software: they en
hance findability and stimulate reuse. We use the Research Software Direct
ory (RSD), developed by the Netherlands eScience Center and partners as a
concrete example.\n\nDomain: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Hum
