SUMMARY:There is Life Beyond POSIX: Storage in both HPC and Data-Intensive
 Applications
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nThere is Life Beyond POSIX: Storage in both H
PC and Data-Intensive Applications\n\nPerez\n\nHPC applications have widel
y used POSIX files as basis of their storage. However, POSIX has a number
of limitations, e.g. limited flexibility in handling complex data or perfo
rmance limitations in certain non-general purpose applications.

On the other hand, the areas of HPC and Big Data (BD) use very different
solutions at storage level, in the same way that their objectives and com
munities have traditionally differed. However, in the last years, HPC appl
ications are using an increasingly high volume of data, often requiring th
e capacity to visualize and analyze this data. Similarly, BD applications
are needing more and more computational power, due to more ambitious chall
enges and the combination of data analysis with simulation processes.

This talk describes some initiatives that we have developed to pro
vide efficient and flexible storage solutions in both HPC and BD applicati
ons. This may be a first step that could be extended to other features of
computing systems, and thus achieve the desired convergence between HPC an
d BD.\n\nDomain: Climate, Weather and Earth Sciences, Computer Science and
