SUMMARY:Data-Centric Workflows in Exascale Weather Forecasting - A Destina
tion Earth Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nData-Centric Workflows in Exascale Weather Fo
recasting - A Destination Earth Perspective\n\nQuintino, Sarmany, Smart, H
awkes, Danovaro...\n\nNumerical Weather Prediction (NWP) is a highly data
intensive HPC application. ECMWF operational weather forecasts generates m
assive amounts of I/O in short bursts, accumulating to tens of TiB in hour
ly forecast cycle windows. From this output, millions of user-defined dail
y products are generated and disseminated to member states and commercial
customers all over the world. These products are processed from the raw ou
tput of the IFS model, within the time critical path and under strict deli
very schedule.
EU funded programmes such as Destination Earth will p
romote a faster adoption of higher fidelity and increased resolution model
s. During the first phase, two high resolution Digital Twins will be devel
oped: (1) a kilometer scale Global Weather Extremes forecast and (2) a hig
h resolution climate change and adaptation digital twin, which combined ar
e estimated to generate around 1 PiB/day.
We present the challenges E
CMWF is facing, in particular with Destination Earth, and the latest devel
opments in model I/O, product generation and data storage. We show how ECM
WF is reworking our operational workflows to adapt to forthcoming new arch
itectures and memory-storage hierarchies, while building the API's that wi
ll empower the users to fully utilise rich, dense Exascale datasets.\n\nDo
