SUMMARY:MS4F - Advancing Scientific Computing Across the Globe through DEI
: Successes and Challenges in Normalizing Inclusion (Part I)
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nThis minisymposium will examine how diversity
, equity and inclusion (DEI) in computational science are defined and mani
fest across the globe and related topics. DEI takes on different forms in
various contexts and settings across the world, and the related issues and
challenges may have common as well as differing features. The goal of thi
s minisymposium is to gather a variety of perspectives and identify common
alities and differences such that patterns may be identified and approache
s and lessons learned shared. Three major topics include: 1) how is DEI de
fined or manifested in your region, 2) what successful strategies have bee
n implemented to address diversity, and 3) what are the challenges to prom
oting DEI.\n\nA Differentiated Diversity: Institutional Delineations and
Contextual Constraints in Scientific Computing\n\nMcNeely, Frehill\n\nThe
past several decades have seen enormous growth in the computing and comput
ational sciences, reflecting increases in related educational and professi
onal opportunities across sectors in society. However, as is particularly
pronounced in the United States (U.S.), everyone does not have access to t

framing for the mini-symposium and consist of facilitated discussion and
reflection on what they're learning and how they'll apply it, and to put a
nswers in a google doc. This will be an implementation thread throughout a

growing body of work on girls and computing show that the digital skills
gender gap is growing despite global efforts to include women and girls. T

sive force for progress, but in many fields the diversity of participants
could be improved. However, the understanding of Diversity, Equity and Inc
lusion in the scientific computing community can be hindered by the indisc
rimate use of labels. The...\n\n\nDomain: Computer Science and Applied Mat
