SUMMARY:A Differentiated Diversity: Institutional Delineations and Contex
 tual Constraints in Scientific Computing
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nA Differentiated Diversity: Institutional De
lineations and Contextual Constraints in Scientific Computing\n\nMcNeely,
Frehill\n\nThe past several decades have seen enormous growth in the compu
ting and computational sciences, reflecting increases in related education
al and professional opportunities across sectors in society. However, as i
s particularly pronounced in the United States (U.S.), everyone does not h
ave access to these burgeoning opportunities and the unequal participation
in related fields has broad implications not only for individual life cha
nces, but for social and economic developments more generally. Adopting a
Science of Broadening Participation approach and understanding related iss
ues as systemic conditions, demographic patterns are delineated in terms o
f varying representation in scientific computing in the U.S. An analytical
focus on ontology, structure, and legitimacy is engaged as a basis for ex
ploring institutional and contextual dynamics that affect and determine pa
rticipation and engagement in related fields. The discussion points to con
tending factors and relationships that are deeply institutionalized and co
ntextually embedded. In this regard, diversity is addressed not merely, or
even principally, as a question of numbers, but rather as a matter of dis
rupting socially and culturally enduring processes and outcomes to enhance
participation and inclusion in computing and related fields.\n\nDomain: C
