SUMMARY:Normalizing Disability – a Pathway to Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nNormalizing Disability – a Pathway to Inclusi
on\n\nWilson\n\nCulturally we hold antiquated perceptions of disability an
d disabled people - assuming they are either “dependents” to be looked aft
er, or are “superhuman” professional para-athletes. I can safely say I am
neither of these! The reality is that most disabled people hold a range of
independence and can hold even more if we remove systemic barriers and pr
ovide the right support.
How can we change these out-dated per
ceptions and how best can we challenge these assumptions?
One
powerful way is to normalise disability in society. We can use the success
ful endeavors to increase disability representation in sport and media as
inspiration to drive change in our domain. As individuals, organisations a
nd as a sector we need to foster a strong culture of disability inclusion,
provide a safe space to encourage disability pride and value a diverse wo
rkforce.\n\nDomain: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Humanities a
