SUMMARY:Better Data, Greater Relevance: Pushing the Bounds of Decarbonizat
 ion Pathways Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nBetter Data, Greater Relevance: Pushing the B
ounds of Decarbonization Pathways Modeling\n\nMcCollum\n\nModels exploring
pathways to deep decarbonization of the global energy and land-use system
s depend on large amounts of data. These data needs span a number of dimen
sions (technological, economic, policy, environmental, and social), and, f
or reasons of tractability have always tended to be limited in their fidel
ity (spatial, temporal, and behavioral). Yet, nowadays, with the energy tr
ansformation having become less a theoretical exercise and more a practica
l imperative, the questions being asked of forward-looking decarbonization
pathways models are becoming increasingly detailed. Modelers are racing t
o keep up with the stakeholder discourse and, partly for this reason, are
now turning to non-traditional data sources to parameterize their tools at
a finer scale than ever before. This talk will discuss the data requireme
nts of energy-economic and integrated assessment models and how edge-compu
ting resources could disrupt current modeling paradigms. The aim is to pro
mote dialogue across research communities – for it is only through such co
nversations that the most innovative of methodologies can be brought to be
ar on the grand science and policy challenges of our time.\n\nDomain: Clim
