From the Trenches of a Central RSE Team: Successes and Challenges of Promoting Software Sustainability in a Multi-Scale Computational Setting
Presenter
DescriptionThe UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a laboratory at the forefront of fusion energy research, a multidisciplinary and computationally intensive domain that places difficult demands on the requisite data and software. Like many national laboratories, UKAEA has long employed staff whose primary role is the development of research software. However, it is only comparatively recently, in tandem with the advent of the Research Software Engineering (RSE) movement, that these roles have been formalised and given the recognition they deserve. The culmination was the creation of a central RSE Team at UKAEA, opening new vistas to promote sustainable software practices. This talk will provide an overview of the current strategies the UKAEA RSE Team uses to promote sustainable software and the successes and challenges in implementing these. Particular focus will be given to the author's personal experience as a central RSE, and some of the initiatives he has been involved in, such as a new training delivery at the intermediate level of software development and community building efforts around a Coding Discussion Group and annual Unconference.
