Description With the modern-day explosion of health data, we are witnessing a fast-rising number of disconnected solutions, data silos, and varying opinions on how to best integrate the oceans of available information. There are evolving discussions on what is considered acceptable regarding how these data should be used. Even if the discussions are productive, it is still questioned whether we have practical and robust technologies to enable those ambitions. Are technology developers keeping track of what society will accept? What are the real obstacles that prevent distributed computing being a routine way of analysing health data? How can practical interdisciplinary ideas be effectively created and tested? In this minisymposium we tackle the basics and promises of federated learning, as well as the complexities of this quickly growing field and the challenges it faces. The presentations will describe current data sharing systems and federated learning approaches, how these approaches are becoming integrated in hospital operations, as well as legal and value considerations to be aware of. The talks will be followed by interactive discussions and exchange of ideas with the audience.
